Banking Blockchain Trade Finance

A regional banking group needed a shared ledger for cross-border trade documents alongside a security overhaul of the network carrying it. MEAICON delivered the smart-contract layer, the private network segmentation, and the managed SOC that now watches both.

The challenge

What the client needed

A regional banking group operating across the Gulf and East Africa was bogged down by paper-intensive trade-finance processes. Letters of credit, bills of lading and customs documents moved between six participating banks through courier services and email, with settlement cycles stretching to weeks. Each bank maintained its own siloed systems, making reconciliation manual and error-prone.

At the same time, regulators were demanding stronger evidence of data integrity and audit trails for cross-border transactions. The group needed a shared, tamper-evident ledger that all participating banks could trust — but the underlying network also had to be hardened against the rising threat of cyber attacks targeting financial messaging infrastructure.

Our approach

How we engaged

MEAICON began with a discovery phase across all six participating banks, mapping existing trade-finance workflows, document formats and reconciliation procedures. We identified the common data elements that could be standardized on-chain and the integration points where each bank's core system would connect to the shared ledger.

From there, we designed the architecture in parallel tracks — the blockchain layer and the security layer — so neither became a bottleneck for the other. Our approach prioritized incremental onboarding so that banks could join the ledger in waves rather than waiting for a single big-bang launch.

  • Workflow discovery and document standardisation across six banks
  • Smart-contract design for trade-document issuance, endorsement and settlement
  • Private network segmentation and zero-trust access controls for ledger nodes
  • Managed SOC deployment with 24/7 monitoring of ledger and network layer

The solution

What we delivered

The delivered platform is a permissioned blockchain ledger where trade documents — letters of credit, bills of lading, customs declarations — are issued, endorsed and settled as smart-contract records. Each participating bank operates a node on the network, with role-based access controlling who can issue, verify or settle a given document.

Behind the ledger, MEAICON segmented the network into isolated zones for ledger nodes, banking core integration APIs, and the monitoring layer. A managed Security Operations Centre now provides 24/7 visibility across both the blockchain network and the surrounding infrastructure, with incident response playbooks tailored to trade-finance threat scenarios.
